When I was at the gym the other day, pedaling furiously on the bike, a woman sat down next to me and started to complain. She sighed that she doesn’t see much of a point to working out, since genetics control everything anyway…
I suppose that there are certain things that are controlled by genetics, such as predispositions to certain conditions or diseases. But even with such a predisposition, I find it hard to believe that being overweight and out of shape won’t make things worse.
What struck me, was with a fatalistic view of the world like that, how could you ever be healthy, happy or successful at anything, much less develop the mindsets for business success.
And she’s not alone. Negative mindsets are held by many people, in all parts of life, including, of course business, and they are particularly detrimental to small business owners and self employed professionals.
Case in point, Marion, an attorney who declared she would “never be able to earn more than $70k a year.”
Or Jack, an architect who would never get “the big jobs”.
Or Hailey, a consultant who was convinced that she had “no time” for a personal life.
Do mindsets really matter? And if so, is it impacting your business success?
